New warden appointed for Ohakune youth hostel
Corinia Mareikura has taken over as the new warden of the Ohakune Youth Hostel. Corinia was asked to take over by the previous warden, Kerry Drape who has gone back to her native Australia. She had relieved Kerry for several weeks before she was offered the job, so she has an idea what is involved. Prior to this, she worked
in the Ohakune Hotel and although she has taken a pay-cut by moving jobs she says she prefers the new job as it means she can spend a lot more time with her daughter, Te Kawai, who is 21 months old. "I finish at the hostel at 10 o'clock in the morning which is when Te Kawai starts school at Te Kohanga Reo, so I can now go with her."
Corinia will be the only warden at the hostel, "but I have lots of cousins and uncles and my father, who will give me a hand if I need it." Corinia has spent the last week cleaning the hostel out and she is hoping to get information about Ohakune's attractions to put up
on the walls. "There's lots of information about the National Park and things outside Ohakune, but hardly anything on Ohakune itself." Corinia wants to make the hostel "a nice warm, friendly place for hostellers, so when they leave they have pleasant thoughts about Ohakune."
