Rural education
REAP .is a word often used in rural areas of the country nowdays. It is an abbreviation for a speciallyfunded Department ' of Education programme called Rural Education Activities Programme. There are thirteen such areas throughout the North Island and the Central King Country REAP area is based in Taumarunui. The new Community Education Organiser Mr Grant Kelly has indicated that REAP Community Education classes and courses for this coming year are being planned now. In Taumarunui an interesting variety is being planned as usual and includes small engine maintenance, weaving, early childhood development, cooking, small business seminars, machine knitting, maoritanga, alternativC health, etc. In the outlying areas courses are also planned. In Ohura it is planned to have an upholstery course, stretch sewing at Otunui, Piopio and Mapiu as well as Taumarunui. National Park will be hosting a popular course iri patchwork. Additional courses in the region can be organised on any subject or topic wherever there is sufficient interest. The first course for 1 985 is another popular shearing course being held for two weeks starting on 29 January at Waihi Pukawa Station between Kutatau and Tokaanu. The tutor is N.Z. Wool Board instructor Graham Corkill from Inglewood who will take trainees for their Blue Seal of the National Shearers Certificate.
