Road and railway repairs underway

This summer Ohakune Council has turned to Thames Street at the Junction, as the latest project in its on-going road improvement scheme. In conjunction with the King Country Power Board the Borough Council has begun reconstruction work on the road. The road will be

widened and existing overhead power cables will be sunk underground. Along with work which is being carried out on the railway bridge at the junction, the work on Thames Street will improve the area before the coming winter's ski season, when a large number of winter

sports enthusiasts will llock into the town. The poor visibility and' narrowness of the road where it passes under the railway bridge at the beginning of the mountain road to the Turoa Skifield has been a cause of concern for some time as hundreds of cars travel up and down the

road every day during the winter months. The work on the bridge, which is being carried out to improve the track for faster electric trains, will also result in the existing dangerous corner on the road under the bridge being removed and a footpath provided.
