Turoa Tumblers

Teachers with the 'Turoa Tumblers' took the opportunity over the holiday break to attend courses which should help improve their gymnastic pupils already impressive performances in national competitions. Glyn Hubbard, a teacher at Ruapehu College, attended an Olympic Solidarity Course at New Plymouth, a course which was attended by gymnastic representatives from as far afield as Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Canadian and Australian lecturers addressed the gymnastic teachers. The course lasted from Friday 28th December to Thursday 3rd January — and 'work' continued until 10.00pm even on New Year's Eve! During the first week of the new year Rita Wise, a primary school teacher who also helps teach the 'Turoa Tumblers' attended a course at the National Gym School, also in New Plymouth. The Tumblers do their training at the Ruapehu

College gymnasium. There are currently about eighty members — from all over the Ruapehu region. Providing youngsters live close enough to see Mt Ruapehu they canjoin, claims Glyn. The club has been in existence for only 6V2 years but already members have achieved success in national gymnastic events. The club will begin its training sessions for the new year next month, during the second week after school re-starts.
