Excellent response to river survey

Most of the people spoken to during a recent survey are in favour of preserving the Manganui- ATe Ao River. Plans have been prepared to build three hydro schemes on the river. The survey was carried out during the Christmas break by a Waikato University student. Robert Peal drove up and down the roads by the Manganui-A-Te Ao River for ten days from 28 December, finding out from people what the purpose of their visit was, what their planned activities were and whether they supported the protection of the river, or the building of the three

hydro schemes. The results of this survey will be submitted to a hearing which will be held next year to decide whether or not the hydro schemes will go ahead. When interviewed while making his survey, Robert said he had an excellent response from the people he talked to, most of them being in favour of the protection of the river. Robert is working for the Wildlife Service of the Internal Affairs Department in Rotorua for the practical part of his Bachelor of Science Degree. When he finishes the degree, he hopes to join the Wildlife Service.
