Book to be launched
Hundreds of hours of research have now been organised into an outline of chapters which will soon become a detailed book about the history of Waimarino. Merrilyn George, an art and clothing teacher at Ruapehu College, has been researching for the book since 1978 and plans to launch it before the Ohakune Borough Council Jubilee in 1986. "The book will cover from pre-European times up to the modern day, including the Chinese Market Gardeners,"she said. "I have hundreds of pages of notes, old maps of all the mills and lots of photographs." Merrilyn has traced the history of the Waimarino as far back as the fourteenth century. These reports were based on oral tradition passed down by the Maori people. The earliest written record dates from 1869. It was at about this time that the first European settlers came here looking for land to buy for the crown, she says.
