Successful Summer Programme
This year's Summer Nature Programme has had a great response from the public, according to the Senior Ranger at the Ohakune Ranger Station, Mr Lysle Irwin. The Programme started on 27 December and will continue running every day until 28 January. The children's programme, which has run daily except New Year's Day, has had at least 20 children each day. "It's good to see that lots of local children are using the programme as well as tourists," says Lysle. The walks to the Crater Lake have been the most popular trips so far, with up to 100 people taking part at Whakapapa and up to 60 at Ohakune. (The chairlifts have been operating at Whakapapa for trampers on the Crater Lake walk). The evening progfammes have also been well patronised, with an average of 20 to 30 people attending every night, "one night we had 60 people turn up." One of the best attended talks was given by Ray Goldring, the Chief Ranger at the Kaimanawa State Forest. He talked and showed slides on the
evolution and development of the forest. Ray recently appeared on the children's television programme 'Spot-On' talking about the forest.
The final evening programme will be on Sunday 1 3th January and from then on there will also be only one walk per day along with the children's programme.
