Horse and cart come to town!
It's not that Ohakune's a little behind the times, these horses, dogs and a cart belong to a Nelson lady, Laura Hawken, who wanted a 'different' sort of holiday. Laura and a friend's daughter, Cushla, were travelling through Ohakune over the holidays. They were heading towards Tauranga, which they expected to reach in about three weeks. Laura was also travelling with Haika, a five-year-old Clydesdale and Rua, a little Healing Colt which was walking behind the cart, "but I will begin training him to lead us soon." said Laura. She also had two German Shepherds with her for company and protection. The dogs either sit in the carriage or walk along beside. "The hospitality has been incredible," said Laura. "We have a tent in case we can't find anywhere else to stay, but everyone along the way has been marvellous." During their visit to Ohakune, they have been staying with Ben Winchcome, whc owns Clydesdales himself. After their adventure ends in Tauranga, Laura plans to have the horses trucked back to the South Island.
