Summer programme on the river
The W anganui River Reserves Summer Nature Programme is running until 28 January at Wanganui/ Pipiriki and Taumarunui. The programme at Pipiriki includes escorted nature and skyline walks near Atene, guided tours through the Colonial House and hangis at Pipiriki Village. A full-day coach tour leaves from Wanganui, stopping at many places of interest along the River Road, with lunch at Pipiriki, local walks and a jet-boat ride. At Taumarunui, there are organised walks through the Te Maire and Ohinetonga Scenic Reserves, and through the Maraekowhai Historic Reserve. More than 2,000 commercial operations and private people are expected to be canoeing the Wanganui River this summer, usually from Taumarunui to Pipiriki. Huts are available along the river for $2 a night per person. But Mr John Lythgoe, the Pipiriki ranger says people should not rely on being able to sleep in the huts, as they may be full. An informal camping ground is situated on the old Pipiriki Hotel site with water and toilets nearby. The Colonial House is open every day from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Another interesting feature trippers may wish to see is the MV Ongarue. The vessel has been restored to the condition it was in when it motored up and down the Wanganui. It is now mounted on the hard at Pipiriki.
