REGULAR RIVER RUNS TO RESUME

Regular five-day boating trips down the Wanganui River will begin in February, thanks to Mr Winston Oliver of Orautoha, near Raetihi. 'Waikapai' Mr Oliver's ten-metre long boat, will carry up to 20 people from Taumarunui to Wanganui every week. Passengers will camp alongside the river at night during the summer months and stay overnight in rangers' huts during the winter months.

Mr Oliver believes the tours will appeal to a greater number of people than other tours on the Wanganui River because, as he said last week "it's different from rafting or canoeing as people aren't in the water getting wet." A canopy will cover Waikapai in wet weather, but the boat will be open when it's fine. 'Waikapai' was named after a steamer that carried stock, cargo and up to 120 passengers up the Wanganui River to Pipiriki earlier this century. The new aluminium-alloy-hulled 'Waikapai' travels at about 9 knots fully laden. It will not have to be winched over rapids as its predecessor was and will be lifted out of the water at Wanganui to be towed back by road to Taumarunui at the end of each trip. Rosalind Donald
