PROMOTIONS

The Ohakune Christmas Carnival, Vianney Douglas 's plans for her summer programme and the Promotions Association's plans for the future were some of the matters discussed at the Promotion Association meeting on Tuesday 11 December which was chaired by Mike Wiggins. Youth programme Vianney told the meeting that the response to the holiday programme she had started for young people in

the Waimarino last week had been good. She has organised drop-in centres in the STEPS programme office in Raetihi and at the Primary School in Ohakune. Vianney explained that as she can only be in one of the centres at a time, other people were needed to help supervise in the centre when she is not there. It was decided a blackboard would be set up in the AA and Ruapehu Region Information Centre which would advise people what was happening on that day and where. Vianney is looking for sponsors for the programme as it is impossible for her to provide all the finance for the scheme herself. She is also collecting gifts for the children, to give as prizes for competitions held during the programme. Information Centre John Sandford told the meeting of the purpose and importance of the Ruapehu Region Information Centre. At present the centre is open only five days a week. John stressed the need to have another full-time person working on a rostered basis, so the centre can be open seven days a wefek. But as yet no suitable person has been found to fill the position under the appropriate employment scheme. The information centre

has been extended to accommodate a true-to-scale topographical relief model of the Ruapehu region. The model 6mx6.5m will be officially unveiled in an informal ceremony by the Mayor of Ohakune, Bill Taylor, at 5.30 on Wednesday (tomorrow). Business people from the Waimarino area are invited to attend this function. Christmas Carnival Bob Norling stressed the need for extra manpower for the Christmas Carnival. Mike Wiggins told the meeting that it was good to see that retailers are preparing for the Xmas Carnival themselves and not leaving it to the Promotion Association. Next year Mike said that the Association should look

towards planning a brochure and map of Ohakune with advertising and visiting points surrounding it. It was also suggested that the Association should look towards inviting interesting guest speakers to the area to hold seminars and similar activities.

The next meeting of the Association will be held in February when a representative from the Development Finance Corporation will be speaking. It is hoped the Association will gain more support from local people next year.
