State Forest slave rates?
I have recently started contract pruning to Karioi State Forest with hopes of being able to make a reasonable income. It is actually within the realms of possibility (only just). The price per tree is so low and the required standard is the highest I have ever seen, perfection is the only acceptable level. As far as I know the Forestry sector is supposed to provide employment but it is very hard for a person to come in and do a perfect job in a short enough time to earn a reasonable income. I can't understand why it is so hard. I realise that 'times are tough'. There is work and willing workers yet things are not fitting together. For every month that pruning is delayed the economics of pruning deteriorates. I am not unemployed at present and don't plan to be but I've got my eyes open for better than slave labour rates.
