Customs' customary win

For the third time in a row, Customs A. Team of Auckland was the first team to complete the Army Training Group's 'Round the Mountain' Relay on Saturday 1 December. Seventy teams entered the race making it a record number of people competing. Each person ran 10 miles of the 100 mile course, which circles Ruapehu. The Customs team kept their title with a time of 10 hours 12 minutes and 4 seconds. The composite event was won by Tamaki from Auckland in 1 1 hours, 35 minutes 5 seconds. Army Staff Veterans won the Veterans' race in 13 hours 59 minutes 51 seconds.

The Women's race was won by Waiouru Bluebells in 13 hours 33 minutes 8 seconds. Waiouru Primary School finished the race in 13 hours 3 minutes 51 seconds with Gareth Bernie (11) completing his 5-mile section in 34 minutes 0.6 seconds. The Ohakune Rugby Club Team finished in a time of 10 hours 12 minutes, 35 seconds in front of the Raetihi team. The Rugby Club team wishes to thank MSD Speirs for sponsoring a t-shirt to each of the runners and Reynolds Motors, Ohakune for providing a van and petrol. The Customs team has competed in the race every year since its inception eight years ago.
