Kerry's cadet school challenge

A keen interest in shooting could well be one of the reasons that Ruapehu College student Kerry Jones has wanted to join the aimy for some time. Another draw card is bound to be the fact that Kerry's dad Allen has been in the New Zealand Army for 25 years. Over 1000 boys from all over New Zealand apply to enter the Cadet School each year and Kerry was one of only 1 20 applicants selected for the 1985 intake. In Cadet School, Kerry will spend one year training to be part of the Regular Army and will then learn a trade. All of this will involve Kerry in a lot of hard work and study but that's something Kerry's used to having recently completed

his fourth year at Ruapehu College. Kerry won the Horne Bros prize for Woodwork last year and this year won the Winstone Samsung Industries prize for Technology. Kerry is looking forward

to 1985, whenhe will beable to take up the challenge of Cadet School. He is keen to work hard but he's also hoping the cadets are given a bit of time off so that he can keep up with his other recreational interest of fishing!
