Waimarino region's needs particular and peculiar
The Waimarino region's employment needs are particular and peculiar, according to Ohakune Mayor, BillTaylor. Further,
he considers those needs are currently not well served by the Wanganui Regional Community College. Mr Taylor made these comments while informing the Bulletin of his resignation from the Wanganui Regional Community College Council. As a Council member he represented the Ohakune and Raetihi Boroughs, Waimarino County and the Waiouru Community Advisory Committee. Mr Taylor says he is not denigrating the College itself, as it has done much to help unemployed young people in other areas. "The extent of its actual involvement in the Waimarino over the past year though is one course which lasted one weekend. "The horticulture, forestry
and tourism industries are well developed in this region and we need skills - training courses to help our young people find their feet in these industries. "We shouldn't have to import outside personnel to fill jobs being generated here. Young people could even train in an assortment of skills so they are able to do different jobs at different times of the year according to seasonal requirements."
