Council to open baths
Having negotiated for a private developer to take over part of Jubilee Park and the Ohakune swimming baths as a sport and recreation centre earlier this year, the Ohakune Borough Council did not envisage that it would be involved in providing this amenity this summer. But the developer — Victoria Markets of Auckland Ltd — has informed Council that it did not want to take over Jubilee Park and the swimming baths
until the end of February or beginning of March next year. This decision left Council with a problem which was at least partially resolved by Council at its Full Meeting last Thursday week. Instead of opening for the usual 3-months summer season it decided to investigate ways of funding the costs of opening the baths — chemicals, heating, cleaning and painting — for a two-month period. Mayor Bill Taylor said
that as the leasing of Jubilee Park had been expected to be finalised earlier, Council had not provided all the costs necessary for running the baths this season — last year costs were in excess of $4000, the major item being wages for student supervisors. A decision was made to open the baths by 20 December and to approach the Department of Labour to discover under what scheme subsidised workers to supervise the pool might be employed.
