Ensuring rail travellers safety
Ensuring rail travellers safety is this team of steel inspectors who were pictured in Ohakune last week during a routine tour of inspection of all bridges and viaducts on the Main Trunk Line. The 5-man team were here to check on the current state of safety of the Hapuawhenua, Taonui and Makatote Viaducts. Clambering up and down, under and over, they have to inspect every nut, bolt, rivet and piece of metal for any sign of corrosion, fatigue or deterioration. A spot check is made every 6 months but on this occasion it was one of their 3-year detailed inspections. They spent a week checking on the state of the
metalwork on the 76-year old Hapuawhenua Viaduct (built 1908) and were last week inspecting the Taonui viaduct. This will be the last detailed 3-year inspection some of these bridges and viaducts will receive. With the electrification
and re-alignment of the Main Trunk Line several — in'cluding the Hapuawhenua — are due to be replaced or bypassed. The 18-span Hapuawhenua Viaduct will be bypassed by a 400ft long reinforced concrete bridge to carry the faster and heavier electric locomotives.
