Ideas sought for Park centenary

Among the ideas proposed for the 1987 centennial celebration of national parks in New Zealand is one for a maori carving to be placed at the entrance to the park in Ohakune. Another is for substantial extensions to the park visitor headquarters at Whakapapa. A third proposed project is the provision of a museum to house the Grace collections ... this will probably be in or near the Thermal Memorial Park at Tokaanu. And there are others, but the National Parks Centennial Commission are still asking for ideas to mark the gifting of the Park (originally 6518ha and now 75,500ha) by Maori chief Te Heuheu Tukino and the Tuwharetoa people to the people of New Zealand. Ideas should be submitted either directly to the Centennial Commission, National Parks and Reserves Board in Wellington or to the local ranger stations which will then forward them to the Commission.
