One million dollars to be spent on Waimarino roadworks

Over one million dollars is to be spent on roadworks around the Waimarino this summer. The summer road scheme was finalised at the meeting of the Waimarino County Council last month. Roads to be upgraded are Crotons Road, Pipiriki Road and Mountain Road. Ohura Road is to be strengthened and resealed and Kopurutuka Road is to be widened and metalled. The wooden bridge on Manga Hou Hou Road is to be replaced with a culvert and the Ruatiti Stream Bridge is being replaced completely. Around 35,500 square metres of resealing will be done in the county, as well as keeping up with general maintenance. The council has employed

an engineer for two months to assist with this work. County Clerk Mrs Hope Vaughan says this is because of the very large work programme involved. ★ ★ ★ Also discussed at the meeting was the slower payment of rates this year. Only $171,000 has been collected this year compared to $190,000 at the same time last year. Mrs Vaughan thinks it may be a "sign of the times" and the present economic situation. The council agreed to look into instalment rating as an alternative. The Raetihi Borough Council use this method with four instalments of rates paid in each year. ★ ★ ★ Apart from rates, the council is in need of a new

Civil Defence Controller. This is a voluntary, parttime position, with payment of four thousand dollars a year. The controller must organise and keep up to date the civil defence plan and coordinators in the area. Former Civil Defence Controller Bully Hays has resigned. ★ ★ * In response to letters from the District Air Pollution Control Officer and the Department of Health concerning a potential increase in air pollution from the Winstone-Samsung mill, the council expressed support for any efforts these departments made to monitor waste and effluent from the mill. Winstone-Samsung is at present doubling its production capacity.
