Unique meeting of Central Plateau clergy

A group of clergyman representing three dioceses jh- Wellington, Waikato and Waiapu — had an historical meeting last Tuesday 30 October at Rev Bob Peck's home in Raetihi. Reverends David Hunter, from Tongariro Prison Farm, Les George (Turangi Co-op Parish), Alan Arrow Smith (Taupo), Fred Peta (Rangipo Prison Farm), David Tomkin (Taumarunui) and Sonny Melbourne (Waiouru Army Camp) were discussing ways that could help in solving the many similar problems their churches face in the Central Plateau region. According to Reverend Peck, the meeting was unique in that normally they would not be able to talk as a group in such a way as each is responsible for their own church within their own diocese. "Economically, socially, culturally, we all have the same problems to face. Our parishioners all come from the same types of industry, such as tourism and farming and we can all help each other to help them." Reverend Peck added that they had also planned a Joint Parish Picnic to be held in February at Turangi. The meeting ended with a luncheon prepared by some women of the women parishioners from Raetihi. Mary Anne Gill
