ADJUSTING INFRA-RED CAMERA
One of the helicopters used in the recent search for a missing light plane was fitted with a very expensive and sophisticated piece of detection equipment. Seen making final adjustments to the infra-red heat-sensing camera at the Raetihi airstrip last month are the crew of Bell Jet Ranger helicopter from Range Helicopters
This piece of equipment, worth about quarter-of-a-million dollars, was used in the search for the missing Grumman Cheetah. This device is so sensitive that when flying at a height of 700ft it can detect heat variations of 0.25° celcius on the ground within an area of 500mx500m and, since every object has its own intrinsic temperature, the
camera can pick out and identify the difference between rubber, metal, plastic etc. It can even distinguish between different types of vegetation and spot the heat from a cigarette a mile away! The shape and movement of any object on the ground can be detected and identified on a screen mounted inside the cockpit.
