New shopping mall finds favour
Business fluctuates according to the weather say most of the new shop owners in Cedar Mall. "When it's bad everyone stays at home," says owner of JJ's Flowers and Handcrafts Mrs Janice Tierney. The weather factor extends to the seasons, says Ragtime owner Miss Carrie Williams. "We're always busy in the winter, things slow down for the summer." The general reaction to the new shops has been favourable. During the school holidaysand over the last few weeks trade has been good, with most owners saying the peak is beginning to decline. "It was boomer during the holidays," says owner of Ohakune Shoes, Mrs Val Parkes. "We're up on the
amount of trade we did last year." Many of the new shop owners put some of the increased trade down to
curiosity about the new mall. "We'll know next year whether part of our trade was due to novelty," says
Mrs Heather Oliver of Friar Tucks. All owners say most of the business comes from locals rather than the tourists.
