NEW FIRE CHIEF NO NOVICE
Raetihi's new fire chief may be new to the paperwork side of fire fighting but he is no novice when it comes to operations. Mr Alec Weir has been a member of the fire brigade for the last 28 years. He doesn't think his new appointment, which is subject to approval by the New Zealand Fire Service, will be very much different from his present position of deputy chief. "But 111 have all the reports to do," he says. "A lot of statistics go into the area office in Wanganui about each fire." The reports include possible causes of the fire, damage sustained and statistics such as the amount of water used. Every 12 months an analysis of operations is carried out. The Raetihi Fire Brigade has fifteen volunteer firemen
and two fire engines. Most training is done locally, with some carried out at the area headquarters. Mr Weir has worked his way up through the ranks to his position as chief and is also involved with ambulance driving. He says he likes being a firemen because it is a job someone needs to do in the community and one which helps the local people.
