Transferring to Taihape

Challengingand rewarding is how Police Constable Kevin Entwisle describes his one-and-a-half years in Raetihi. Mr Entwisle and his family are soon moving to Taihape. "It's to further my police studies," Mr Entwisle says. "We aim to get established and settle down before our oldest starts school." Mr Entwisle says he has really enjoyed living in Raetihi. "It's a great place and there are a lot of good people here." He says he has learnt a lot from being in charge of an area on his own. "You have to do everything involved in running a station. You learn every aspect of police work. " Mr Entwisle has enjoyed meeting so many people and being involved in small community life. He will particularly miss the rugby and squash clubs. Building up a good rapport with the young people has been one very rewarding aspect of his work, he says. "I just get out there and talk to them and get to know them personally," he says. "You can't do that in the city, the area is too big." The most dangerous situation Mr Entwisle says he has encountered in Raetihi is dealing with fighting in the hotel. He says a competitiveness often develops between locals and seasonal workers. The best thing about his job, he says, has been being accepted by the community and being proud of it.
