King Country Golf Tourney
The 56th King Country Golf Championships were held over three days from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 October on the Waimarino Golf Course at Makaranui. Only during World War II years have they not been held. The championships date back so far, said Waimarino Golf Club president Ian Strachan at Sunday's presentation of prizes, that hewas in those early days, Joey Blyth's caddie! Another golfer who could remember those former times was also present at last week's function — Hal Manson. The teams competing in this year's championship included Korokanui, Mapiu, Matiere, Pio Pio Aria, Stewart/ Alexander, Taranui, Taumarunui, Te Awamutu,
Waimarino, Waiouru and Waitomo. The presentation of prizes which was attended by 200 people was held in the Waimarino Golf Course clubhouse. President Ian Strachan complimented the work of Waimarino Golf Club's greenkeeper, Mr Eric Schrieber, who for 24 years had prepared the course for six consecutive King Country Championships (held every four years at Waimarino). The prizes were presented by Mrs Betty Strachan. Results Championship Cup 36 Holes Gross Silver Winner S. Duncan (TA) 162, Runner-up L. Stephens (Taum) 165.
