LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

i Thankyou On behalf of the Ohakune Growers' Association, I would like to thank the following people for their contribution to making the 'Big Carrot' project such a success. Although I said that my thanks "can go to no one individual" in the letter published in last week's Souvenir Issue, events of the day indicate I should make a few exceptions. Your work will be appreciated for many years, Paul. To Paul Beckett, master craftsman, a big thank you for completing the carved totara sign at the site, in four days and three nights. Thanks also to Terry Drayton, our P.R. man who co-ordinated the whole project from start to finish, and compered the show 'on the day' ... a mammoth task. To Chris Lyon for the landscaping at the site, completed in 25 days, an extraordinary achievement. Finally to Lisa Patterson for lifting the cover off the Carrot in such spectacular fashion and for her help. We raised $8,400 from the ball held later that night, final figures from the whole day will be released shortly. Thank-you's would be incomplete without an acknowledgement to the Waimarino Bulletin staff for their many hours of hard work late into the night to compile the excellent 'Souvenir Issue' which appeared last week. It is certainly something I will keep for many years as a true picture of the day's events.

P.B.

President Growers ' Association War games I would like to point out to Mr G. Taylor (whose letter appeared in last week's edition of the Bulletin ) the danger of comparing a peace-keeping police force or army with the potential destruction of this planet through the use, intended or not, of nuclear weapons. I accept the need for traffic lights and electricity as well, but don't make the mistake of confusing the

issues. We stand to lose life itself and squander our human heritage rather than just the comforting props of materialism under lock and key. I don't wish to give our country away either ... indeed it's my deep love of our country and the way of life we enjoy that makes me cry out in the face of threatening military alliances and the obscene expanding arsenals of the "two tribes".

Peace groups have nothing to lose you're right, except their skin, and hair, and children, and all the beauty

around them, just the same as you. Not such a narrow view really.
