WANGANUI RIVER PICNIC AREA

The Wanganui River Reserves, in cooperation with the Wanganui County Council, are preparing some waste land between the River Road and the Wanganui River and transforming it into an informal camping area near Atene. When fully established, there will be a toilet block, which will be serviced with piped water from a spring, plus the standard style of picnic tables. Access will be prepared by the heavy machinery of the County Council, so that motorists will be able to drive through the area. An SES group, from the small local community at Atene, are clearing the site and planting native plants. These will act as a privacy screen from the roadside and will also improve the overall attractiveness of the area. Steps have been made from the top area to the river's edge so that safe access is available equally for motorists and river users. Although not many people canoe the river from Pipiriki to Wanganui, Senior Ranger John Lythgoe expects that this site, the only camping area on the River Road, will attract mobile home motorists and cyclists this summer.
