Children's book writer visits local school

Well-known New Zealand children's book writer, Anne de Roo, visited Ohakune recently to talk to children at the Primary School. She spent two days at the school talking to small groups of children from Forms 1 and 2 as well as a few from Standards 3 and 4, about the art and pleasure of writing. Anne de Roo, who has written nine books directed at the younger reader, told the children, in response to questions, of the pleasure and satisfaction she derives from putting words together and playing about with them. Normally based in Palmerston where she lives, Anne de Roo has travelled the lower half of the North Island and up to Hamilton

"fairly extensively for a number of years" on this 'Writers in Schools' scheme, sponsored by the New Zealand Book Council, which brought her to Ohakune the week before last. This was her first visit to Ohakune and it was at the

invitation of Ohakune Primary School principal, Mr Bill Taylor, who is also a writer of children's books. Ms de Roo's latest book 'Jacky Nobody' won this year's 'New Zealand Children's Book of the Year' awafd which is sponsored by the Government Printer.
