REPORT CRITICAL OF SOME RESTAURANTS
The first report from Ohakune's new health inspector, Mr G.R. Gillespie of Wanganui, was heard 'in committee' at last month's meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council. The report covered every restaurant and eating house in Ohakune. Mr Gillespie said that he and two other health inspectors had inspected all these premises and found that from a health point of view they ranged from "outstanding to unacceptable." His report was understood to be highly critical of one
particular Ohakune restaurant with another two possibly involved as 'substandard'. He advised Council to go into committee about the standards at these restaurants because the owners had not yet been advised officially of his findings. Two members of the Ohakune Borough Council, Mayor Bill Taylor and Cr Ellen Gould, declared a pecuniary interest and excused themselves from the debate. They have an interest in a local eating house.
Cr Errol Sue, who is also deputy mayor, took the chair saying that"immediate action is required and if we don't get onto it smartly something embarassing could happen." "It is not a town planning matter — it is a health problem and action is needed now." The Council then went 'into committee' with public and press representatives excluded. They remained in committee for nearly 90 minutes before their normal monthly meeting was able to fesume.
