RUBBISH BAGS GREET VISITORS TO OHAKUNE

The continuing problem of rubbish bags being left on SH49 at the entrance to Turoa Alpine Village and on the approaches to Ohakune, was brought up at this month's meeting of the

Ohakune Borough Council's Works and Planning Cpmmittee. Borough Foreman, John Anderson, told the committee that there is a collection there once a week on

Monday mornings. Despite all residents being told that only official rubbish bags would be picked up, boxes of rubbish were still being put out. Mayor, Bill Taylor, said that commonsense should prevail in such instances. Mr Anderson replied that he does pick up the boxes as, if he were to leave them, dogs and cats would pick at them, creating an unnecessary mess. Chairman, Peter Hammond, recommended that a letter be sent to all ratepayers in the village requesting them to place their rubbish bags at the front of their chalets instead of on the main road and they would be picked up by the council staff.
