Railways make donations
Two representatives from New Zealand Railways head office in Wellington visited Ohakune recently to present cheques to three local recipients as a mark of appreciation for the part the town had played in making last year's Main Trunk Line 'spike-driving' 75th anniversary such an outstanding success. After doing their sums New Zealand Railways
found that they had underspent the allocation of funds set aside for last year's ceremony by $300. They decided to donate this money to the Ohakune community which hosted the several hundred guests who had attended this historic weekend event last November. The three recipients they selected were Ruapehu College, the Ohakune Primary School and the
Ohakune Promotions Association ... they each received a cheque for $100. The two schools have decided to spend their unexpected and generous gift on books for their libraries and the Ohakune Promotions Association will invest their windfall in some community project. The cheques were presented in a brief informal ceremony in the Ohakune Borough Council Chambers.
