WAIOURU COMMUNITY NEWS

The September meeting of the Waiouru Community Advisory Committee was told that the Burns Pool temperatures would be kept at 81° F for the next two months or more in order to maintain a control on the eye infection problems that appeared to develop as a result of higher temperatures. ★ ★ ★ Members of the 'Beautiful New Zealand' campaign intend planting more trees in the Waiouru area in the future. It is hoped that there will soon be a belt of trees planted at the edges of the township to 'introduce' motorists to the area. Work has already been done on some sections of the road near the Army Museum but progress has been slow because of a shortage of PEP workers available to do the work. At present the planting is being done by PEP workers who are transported to Waiouru each day from Marton. Local weather conditions were taken into account when the plants were chosen and will probably consist mainly of Redwoods and Gums. ★ ★ ★ Mrs Toohill, midwife at the Maternity annex of the Waiouru Military Hospital advised the meeting that Dr Goldsmith, a pediatrician from Wanganui would be available for consultation on 9 October in the Community Health Centre and would continue to hold surgery once a month in future. Appointments to see Dr Goldsmith will be by doctor's referral and may be made thru the local public health nurse. ★ ★ ★ The meeting was told of the Skating Rink Committee's plan to continue fundraising activities to raise capital to build an outdoor skating rink for the area. The possibility of an indoor rink had been considered but the costs were over $500,000 so it has been decided to build an outdoor rink equipped with a safety rail. Toilets and changing rooms would be situated at one end. The rink will probably be sited opposite the playcentre building.
