Young trout released in Karioi lakes

Four hundred trout, bred at the Tongariro Hatchery in Turangi were released into the Karioi Lakes on Thursday 30 August by Fisheries Officer, Dave Johnson, staff from Karioi Forest Service and the Internal Affairs Department, Turangi. The trout arrived in a tank of spring water set at 10°C, with oxygen being pumped in through the top. The thirteen-month old rainbow trout were then taken out of the tank upon arrival at Karioi, put into plastic tubs, transported on the backs of two motorcycles over the hill, to be released into the lake. Speed was essential, as the fish could only stay in the tubs a maximum of five minutes or they would die through lack of oxygen. There were a few anxious moments half way through the exercise as one of the bikes failed to start despite frantic efforts by its driver, Kevin Stringer from the Karioi Forest Service. Finally it roared into life with more than a few sighs of relief evident. The trout will not be fully grown for at least eighteen months at which time there will be more than a few keen fishermen (with permits of course) eager to nab them for the table.
