Turoa turns on fine weather
Turoa Skifields reported a great weekend's skiing, turning on fine weather and fresh snow which resulted in snow-tanned faces for over 5000 skiers. Saturday saw over 2500 skiers on the mountain and a similar turnout on Sunday. The Homestyle Slalom was run on Saturday on a hard course which saw fast times being recorded by the top racers. 3rd Beth Turnbull, Manawatu Tramping & Ski Club (97.87secs) Men's Slalom lst Marcus Hubrich, Turoa Alpine & Ski Club (65.45secs) Mattius Hubrich, Turoa Alpine & Ski Club (69.40secs) 3rd Chris Mosaed, Turoa Alpine & Ski Club (75.05secs) On Saturday night 12cm of light powder snow fell on the mountain and skiing conditions on Sunday were described as 'absolutely superb' by a visiting skier. The Rossignol Giant Slalom Race was run on Sunday in perfect weather and on a hard packed course. The race attracted
100 starters most of whom had raced in the Homestyle Slalom the day before. Ladies lst Julie Newell 44.23 points 2nd Beth Turnbull 134.55 3rd Lisa Powell 164. 17 Mens lst Marcus Hubrich 3.44 points 2nd Mattius Hubrich 46.41 3rd Chris Mosaed 137.35 Over $2000 worth of prizes were put up by Summer and Winter Sports Ltd (importers of Rossignol skis) and Homestyle Bakeries for the events. The prestigious Grimwade Cup was won by Marcus Hubrich with the best combined result of 3.44 points.
