Decision to be made on regional holiday map at meeting tonight
A decision is expected to be made at tonight's meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council's Finance and Administration Committee about the commissioning of a scale-model topographical map of the Ruapehu region. The proposed holiday and recreation map — a tabletop model extending from the southern shores of Lake Taupo in the north to Waiouru and Pipiriki in the south — will, if Council's decision is in favour, be displayed in the Ruapehu Region Information Centre in Clyde Street, Ohakune once alterations have been completed. The mapping modelmaker is Mr Milton Johnson of Rotorua who has already made several other similar maps including one for Hospitality Wanganui and the Turangi Tourist Information Centre. He has recently completed another for the Bridge Lodge in Turangi — it was this one that he brought into the Ohakune Borough Council Chambers lastweek for councillors and others to see. During the short time it was on display it created a lot of interest and attention ... "most impressive," said Bully Hays, chairman of the Finance and Administration Committee. One of the functions the map will perform the quick identification and location of any geographical/ recreational feature wkhin the map area by illuminating it at the press of a button.
