Fledgling skiers future champions
Today 's fledgling schoolage Waimarino skiers could be the country's future national champions — that's the opinion of AHI Turoa Public Relations Manager Andy Chapman. School parties spend six weekday afternoons on the mountain each term, and the professional tuition they receive is beginning to pay off, Mr Chapman says. Under the guidance of chief instructor John Ball and his crew many children already show a lot of promise, he says. "It's working. The level of improvement is such that a couple of kids are already up with the best in their age group and are competing in national championships." AHI Turoa introduced special packages for school parties in 1979, encouraging local youngsters to make the most of the mountain. "We realised they're our future skiers. Enthusiasm for the mountain in the
future is going to come from these youngsters. "We want to get in behind and encourage them." Three local schools currently make use of Turoa during the school terms, and AHI caters to out of town groups spending several days here.
