Overstayers remanded
At Ohakune District Court on Thursday 2: August, Judge A. Satyanand heard the Immigration Department's case against three Ohakune farmers who had overstayed their visas in this country. Sandra Jane Ball, 23, Thomas Henry Ball, 26, and Ann Elizabeth Gardner, 49, all pleaded guilty and were remanded until 18 October this year. Mr D.V. Thomas, ap-
pearing for the Immigration Department, told His Honour that Mrs Gardner is a British subject who entered this country on 19 September 1982 and was granted a visa until 10 March 1983 which was then extended to 5 September 1983. She has remained in this country unlawfully since then. He added that Mr and Mrs Ball entered this country on 19 November 1982 and were given a visa until 1 9 May 1 983 which was also extended until 5 September of that year. They have also remained in New Zealand unlawfully. Bail, which was not opposed, was set at $200 each. Mr D.G. Harvey who appeared for the Balls and Mrs Gardner on instructions from their solicitor, Mr Peter Hankins, said that as his clients owned farm land locally, they are unlikely to abscond. The judge ordered that the defendants were to report to the Ohakune Police on Friday 14 September, N between 3pm and 7pm. The Bulletin understands that representations are to be made to the Minister of Immigration in the meantime.
