Beautiful Butterfly Hi! I am Sue the caterpillar and ever since I have hatched out of my microscopic egg I have been eating ever so much. I have been eating all the leaves that I hatched on. I am so fat and full and sleepy. I think I will make a nice safe, soft bed and sleep and sleep and sleep. Yawn! Yawn! I have slept for a long time and I feel strange. I will try to get my legs out of bed and pull my body out. "Oh, I have got beautiful wings! I can dry them out and try to fly." "I can fly! I will fly to a leaf and lay some eggs. When they hatch they will eat and eat and sleep and sleep. When they wake up they will get a surprise and be a beautiful butterfly like me." Paula Greenwood Age 10 The Mad Invcntion One morning there was a big rush to a garage in town. I went over to the garage and went inside to see what was going on. A scientist was finishing a mad invention. It was weird, it was wonderful but we didn't know what it was. Everyone whispered their ideas to each other. All of a sudden the machine rumbled and grumbled and little orange carrots popped out of it. Everybody roared with laughter. Fancy inventing a carrot machine for Ohakune where we grow delicious carrots! The mad scientist stomped out of the garage mumbling to himself "Should have made a brussel sprout machine." John Greenwood Age 11 MORE NEXT WEEK Look out for next week's competitions — another crossword puzzle and a colouring-in competition plus more things to do. We are also interested in receiving short stories from children, any that we feel are particularly good, we will publish.
