Airport for Waimarino

The possibility of establishingan 'Airport Authority' was again raised at last week's meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council. Following- an earlier meeting between the Waimarino County Chairman, Bruce Berry, Raetihi Mayor, Garrick Workman, and legal advisor, Godfrey Harvey, it was decided to call another meeting this Thursday (30 August) between the three local authorities and all interested parties, to investigate the iicensing, setting up, administration and maintenance of an airport which would allow for charter flights.

"Much of the spadework has already been done" said Mayor Workman, "but we need to take it a step further." Cr Terry Tapp of Winstone Afforestation said that: "as the main user of aircraft in the area he would like to be involved in any future planning of an airport." It was resolved that Mayor Workman and Crs Cornwall and Tapp act as representatives of the Raetihi Borough Council on any proposed airport authority but other councillors who are interested are also invited to participate.
