New citizens sworn in
A naturalisation ceremony — the first of its kind for the small community in National Park — was held for three people in the National Park School on Friday 10 August. A fairly rare occasion — the last naturalisation ceremony in the Taumarunui County was held in 1977 — this one was conducted to coincide with the school assembly and was attended by
pupils of the school, staff and well-wishers. The three people who were granted citizenship and received their naturalisation certificates included one from France and two from Holland. They were: Mr Gilles Henri Zouaqui who, until recently, had been employed as chef at the Chateau Tongariro for the past two-and-a-half years. He has since
transferred to the THC at Waitangi. Mr Henk Van de Wetering and Mrs Helena Van de Wetering. Originally from Holland the Weterings and their children moved down from Auckland in search of the tranquil rural life 12 months ago. Henk Van de Wetering is a warden at Waikune Prison. After swearing their oath of allegiance each of the new citizens received their framed certificates from the chairman of Taumarunui County Council, Mr Don Middleton, • with councillors Noeline Buckland and Ken Malcolm and county clerk, Barry Bartling, in attendance. . A congratulatory telegram was received from the new Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Peter Tapsell. ☆ ☆ ☆
