Ohakune skier wins disabled champs
Fifteen-year old Patrick Cooper of Ohakune won the 1 984 disabled skiers national championships which were held at Coronet Peak a fortnight ago. These championships are held every year at one of the skifields in New Zealand. This year about 20 participants with varying degrees of disability competed for the slalom and giant slalom events on Coronet Peak where all competitors were accommodated in club huts at the base of the skifield. Patrick, a single lower limb amputee (the result of an accident in Ohakune when he was five years old) won the overall championship as well as his group event. According to Turoa's resident instructor for the disabled, Michelle Laing, all competitors enjoyed their 5day stay at Coronet Peak. Two days were devoted to training, two to racing and the last day was a pure fun day.
