Ski news from Turoa

McDonalds Cup Fast-food giant McDonalds has agreed to sponsor the McDonalds cup — a race for juniors under the age of 15 as on 1 July this year. This race was due to be run on 19 August, weather permitting, or the first fine day thereafter. The race takes the form of an easy Giant Slalom and all competitors will be given a gift voucher irrespective of placing. Homestyle-Rossignol Race Weekend Slalom and Giant Slalom 25-26 August 1984. (Part of North Island Circuit Race). "This year, with the amalgamation of Homestyle and Rossignolinconjunction with Turoa Skifield and the organisation of TASCI, we are looking forward to a race weekend of high calibre," says AHI Turoa Ski School Director John Ball. With Rossignol joining in, the racing and trophies now total over $2,000. Saturday is Homestyle Slalom Day and Sunday will be Rossignol Giant Slalom Day, with skiers of all levels being catered for. "A really exciting weekend with a bigger and brighter-

social function than ever before. Come down and get caught up in the race fever," says John Ball. North Island Secondary Schools' Skiing Competition The 1983 competition saw 209 students taking part in the North Island Secondary Schools Skiing Competition at Turoa, with remarkably good snow and weather conditions. The competition will again be hosted by Turoa on the 17-18 September. Preparations are under way and entries must be received at Ruapehu College by Friday 17 August. Martini Giant Man Race The Martini Giant Man "Over the Mountain Race" will be held at Mt Ruapehu on 6 October this seaon. The race has attracted many entries in the past and is the prime mover behind the men and women who are seen running around the district with skis, boots and packs on their backs from early June onwards. Entry forms and conditions of entry will be available from most ski shops early this month and will be limited again to the first 50 entrants. The entry fee is $25

which includes the after-race function. First prize is $1,000 plus the Martini Cup. There will be 10 placing prizes (valued at $1500) and a "first lady home" prize. Snow Wing The weekend of 28/29 July saw fine, cairn weather, good skiing and sunburnt faces at Turoa. - It also saw the editor of the "Skier"magazine, Derek Paterson arrive with a new product to be tested. Called a Snow Wing, and

designed and developed by John Quellin of Snow Wing Marketing Ltd in Auckland, it is essentially a windsurfing .configuration on skis. Consisting of a sail and universal attachment for the skis, the Snow Wing had been brought to Turoa for testing by Derek Paterson and Adrian Farnsworth. Initial trials seemed to suggest a promising future for the Snow Wing. * However, the cairn conditions did not permit extensive testing, and further tests will be undertaken.
