OHAKUNE GARDEN CIRCLE

At the Garden Circle evening held on 24 July members were entertained with a very interesting talk on autumn colour in plants and trees given by Mrs Jackie Murray of Waiouru, who holds a diploma in horticulture. Mrs Murray explained how biological changes within the plant as it prepared for the winter dormancy period created " the fiery autumn display in some of the deciduous varieties. Guidelines were laid down and judges selected for the Borough Garden Competition to be held again this year. Gardens to be judged

on spring and summer display. Competition winners: Polyanthus E. Samson; Hellibore L. McQuarrie, E. Samson; Flower of choice O. George, R. Morris; Shrubof choice T. Phillips, E. Clarke, L. McQuarrie. The competition for the August meeting is a collection of spring bulbs and a collection of spring flowers. Meetings are held at the homei of the vice president Mrs B.M. barnes in Rangataua Road, Ohakune, on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 8pm. New members will be warmly welcomed.
