POLICE PROMOTION
A familiar police face in the Waimarino, though seldom accompanied by the uniform, will be seen less frequently when sergeant Mike Keaney — formerly detective Mike Keaney of Taihape — transfers to Taumarunui this week. Mike Keaney has been a plain-clothes detective with the Taihape CIB for the past 3 x/i years and, in that role, has often been involved in police enquiries and court cases in the Waiouru, Ohakune and Raetihi area. With his promotion. to police sergeant in the uniformed branch and transfer to become second-in-command of the 13-man Taumarunui sub-district he hopes to bring his experience and expertise to his new job which he regards as "a great challenge." The work, which will include search and rescue, will be very different from what he's been used to in the CIB — such things as providing security for expresident Jimmy Carter at Waiouru earlier this year — but he thinks this knowledge of the police force's plainclothes branch will be useful to the younger uniformed constables under his command. While the Waimarino won't be seeing as much ofhim in his official capacity in future he hopes to get back for various social occasions. Mike and his wife Diane and their four children have made many friends during their 3'/2 year association with Taihape and the Waimarino and they hope to maintain contact. He said last week that he was sad tto be leaving a -ommunity that had shown him and his family so much hospitality and friendship.
