ALL WEATHER POOL

All that stands between the National PaVk community and its covered, heated swimming pool is a single signature. National Park principal David Mcjlae says the school is awaiting the goahead from the Minister of Education, Mr Russell Marshall: "And at this stage we understand this is imminent." Mr Marshall must sign a licence approving the $28,000 project, which will provide year-round heating and a building to cover over the existing pool. The school is still several thousand dollars short of the project target, but has already raised $23,000. A letter will be sent to businesses and organisations asking for donations to help bring up the project total, Mr MacRae says. And the Home and School Association will continue its fundraising efforts with a social in the Waikune Officers' Club early in the third term. Work on the 12.5m x 6m pool includes creating shallow and deep ends,

rebuilding the changing rooms and putting in new toilet facilities. The Fletcher 'Brownbuilt' building will be roofedwith a clear, transpareilt material, Mr MacRae says. In addition the pool's new three metre surround will be tiled with cobblestones. The entire community looks to benefit from the project with a provision for use of the pool for' community events. A condition for the $1 for $2 subsidy received from the Internal Affairs Department's Community Facilities at Schools scheme is that the pool must be open to the community for 30 hours a week throughout the year, Mr MacRae says. Funds have so far been ceceived from: National Park Community Council Reserves Account $10,000; Department of Internal Affairs $1 for $2 subsidy from the Community Facilities at Schools Scheme $8,177; School children, School Committee, Home and School Association $2,750; Department of Lands and Survey $1,500.
