HIROSHIMA DAY

MONDAY, 6 AUGUST On 6 August, 1945, the Japanese city of Hiroshima was destroyed by an atomic bomb. On the 39th anniversary of Hiroshima Day the Waimarino Peace Group urges local people to sign a national petition calling for New Zealand to become a "neutral, nuclear weaponfree zone state." One member, Mrs Linda Keith, says the group will meet on Thursday night to discuss distributing petition forms, which will be presented to Parliament in September. In 1983 the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (also bombed) launched a "programme to promote the solidarity of cities towards the total abolition of nuclear weapons," Mrs Keith says. "It must hearten them immensely to hear of the growing number of communities throughout the world who have declared themselves nuclear wea-pons-free zones," she says. Ohakune Borough Council - recently voted the Borough nuclear weapons-free, and will shortly have the logQ pictured installed at the three main approaches to town.
