RUGBY
cont 'd from front page cheered, waved flags and rattles, produced a giant banner proclaiming their team to be 'a mountain of a team'. The rugby players thoroughly appreciated this support, but it did appear to* startle some of the Spriggen. Park regulars. Ken George, coach and Dana Blackburn, assistant coach, have done a splendid job with this team and a more loyal bunch of fellows would be difficult to find. Some of the reserves have sat on the bench for 4 or 5 weeks on end without getting a game, but such has been their committment to the team that they too never missed the many practise nights the team had. Team spirit was as high as it could be. The captain, Steve Gordon was an excellent and popular leader. The game against W H SOB opened sensationally when in the fourth minute Steve Gordon cut through past at least seven opposition players to score a great try. Four minutes later Brendon Wilson dropped a neat field goal and Ohakune led 7 to 0. After 30 minutes James Ennis who was in great form had to retire with a rib injury and was replaced by D. Alabaster. Just before half time Kellick Harding was sinbinned for the third time this year and the whistle went to close the first half with WHSOB hot on attack. WHSOB's best forward, Jim Sommerville went off injured and was replaced by W. Avers.
John Fearn missed two relatively easy penalty kicks for Old Boys and veteran forward. Peter Vivian, playing his Jast game . for WHSOB got a little out of hand and he too was sin binned to be shortly followed by his team mate R. TeHuna. With time running out, Ohakune lifted it's game and Kellick Harding finished off a nice team effort to score near the posts and the additional two points were added by his brother, Lachlan Harding. The final whistle saw Ohakune still on attack and the scoreboard in their favour 13 to 0. Forwards to shine included Graeme Pike, j'im Murphy, Mark Watchman, and Bruce Cranston while in the backs Whetu Mareikura, Brendon Wilson, Steve Gordon, and Lachlan Harding were to the fore, All Ohakune are proud of this team and congratulations to all are extended.
