Annual Work Day
On Thursday 300 pairs of willing hands from Ruapehu College go out into the community looking for work. The college's annual student work day. last year raised $3000 and students hope to repeat the success this year. Money raised is spent on equipment not normally supplied by the Education Department or purchased through Board funds. The college's student council allocates money after applications from staff and pupils. Over the last year money has been spent on beautifying the grounds, gym seating, financing the purchase of a computer, printing the school magazine, and buying catering equipment and athletic singlets. Some has also been set aside to consider the purchase of a bus. Past work days have provided the college with many items of equipment common to urban secondary schools. "This is a direct result of the community's generosity and the goodwill of pupils who are prepared to work — the payment for that work being in the form of a donation to the college," a spokesperson said.
