OHAKUNE — MARIST
Ohakune played Marist in their rescheduled game at Raetihi last Thursday, continuing their fine season's form with another victory, this time by 13-3. The match started badly for Ohakune, when James Innes limped off after ten minutes but his replacement was Kellick Harding who had another fine game. Dennis Ngaturere had four penalty opportunities in the first half to put Marist in the lead, only succeeding at his last attempt. Lachlan Harding replied almost immediately. On half-time, Mark Watchman scored a try after half-back Whetu Mareikura had darted away from a maui and evaded several tackles before releasing the fin,al pass. The conversion attempt was not successful thus, at the break the score was 7-3 to Ohakune. After several attacks at the Marist line, Ohakune were rewarded with a try from Steve Gordon. It came after a five-metre scrum when Bruce Cranston broke off the back with the ball and released it to Gordon who swerved his way across the line. Harding converted in front of the post. As an aside, it was interesting to see so many locals at Raetihi on what was a working day. Presumably many of them own their own businesses, but how many were sick that day? Final result 13-3. Seorers — Ohakune: M Watchman, S. Gordon tries, L. Harding penalty and conversion. Marist: D. Ngatuere penalty.
