Karate exponents graded every six months

Students from Ohakune and National Park clubs of Whanake Rangataua Karate were stringently put through their paces during the grading session held at the Ohakune Primary School recently. All members go through gradings every six months and must perform and name (in Japanese) all techniques which his or her grade requires. Along with numerous Kata or patterns, each member sat a written exam and individual analysing by local instructor Charles Mareikura, was carried out during training sessions prior to the actual grading day. Promising member Mario Mareikura, although extremely small, fought very well, not shirking an opponent in all his 45 fights. Taking on two or three others at a time still saw him giving his best. Richard Mariekura and Valanique Wilson were rewarded for their fine display of skill and endurance on the day, and for their hard work over the past 6 years. They were graded to a

provisional Junior Black Belt. Their dedication over the years has been extremely commendable.
